Inspired by Taeyang's (Big Bang) new single, Wedding Dress. I really wanted to make it like his music video, where the role of the protagonist isn't quite clear until the end, with an end on a melancholic, but also slightly happy tone.
Wedding Dress.
A pristine white dress, beautiful light pink roses and giggling bridesmaids surrounded me. We laughed and smiled, for it was a day that we'd never forget, that I'd never forget. We chatted and cried and laughed, celebrating the wedding that we had been planning for months. I heard a light knock on the door and my mum walked in. “He wants to see you, honey.” My friends teased me, saying something about seeing another woman. I left the room and walked out into the hallway. Before turning into the corridor where he was waiting, I smoothed my dress and tried to calm down.
He once told me that he was the luckiest man in the world. I smiled to myself as I recalled the times we spent together. We were neighbours as children and always played with each other and constantly slept over at each others' houses. We were the best of friends. We remained so even when we entered middle school and high school, spending weekends at the movies, chatting on the phone, and the like. And even after college, when we entered the work force, we took the time out of our busy schedules to spend time with each other. We'd surprise the other at work with a box of chocolates, or a bag of coffee, and we'd even the occasional lunch together, reminiscing about our childhood. I knew that this would the proper culmination of it all. An exciting and hectic day, celebrating the union of two people who loved each other. I took a deep breath, turned the corner and called out to him. He looked around frantically before seeing me. Instantly, his face lit up. As the man I've loved for 20 years walked towards me, beaming, I was filled with joy. He hugged me close and I breathed in the smell of his cologne.
“I'm so glad you could make it. It means the world to us for our best friend to be here as our maid of honour.”
I smiled back. “Don't be silly, it's an honour for the two of you to have chosen me. So, what's the real reason you called me out?”
He looked around uncomfortably. “How does she look? Is she happy? She's not having second thoughts about this is she?”
As the questions were poured onto me, I felt guilty. I wanted her to leave him. I wanted him to look at me and realise that I was the right one for him. That I'd been standing here the whole time. But I pushed away those thought and looked him in the eye. “Calm down. Haven't the two of you been going out since high school? If she had any doubts about you. Any at all, she wouldn't be here. So be confident. She loves you and you love her and all of us support the two of you. Go get ready, you'd better be standing at the altar next time I see you, beaming with joy.” As I said the last sentence, a tear rolled down my cheek. I couldn't contain my tears, my sorrow.
He looked at me with alarm in his eyes. “Are you okay?” he asked me. His hands were on my shoulders. I could feel my heart speeding up with the contact of skin on skin.
I turned sharply away from him. “Stop. You don't want any rumours about you having a secret lover on your wedding day do you?”
“Well, no, but I'm worried about as a friend.”
I forced a smile. “I'm fine, I'm just so happy for the two of you. I bet my mascara's running. Jeez, now I have to get back and have them redo my make-up. Don't worry about me. Go and get ready to marry the woman you love.”
He nodded and as he left, he shouted. “You're the best friend anyone could ever have! Thanks!”

As she walked down the aisle, in that pristine white wedding dress, I saw him the happiest I'd ever seen him. His joy surprised me. I realised that she was the only one who would ever bring that much happiness to him. And as they said their vows, I silently took back every curse, ever ill wish I had ever directed towards them. And as he slid the ring onto her finger, I wished them eternal happiness.
And as they kissed, a tear slid down my cheek.
